The 5 Ps of Financial Freedom for Psychiatric NPs (How I Paid Off $224,000)
Sep 21, 2026
Many psychiatric nurse practitioners already earn good incomes and still feel like they have to keep working. Extra shifts. Another contract. A yes to opportunities they do not really want.
I know that feeling because I lived it while carrying $224,000 in debt. I paid it off in twenty-two months, and along the way I built the framework I now teach: the 5 Ps of financial freedom. Perspective, Plan, Process, Profit, and Position.
This post gives you the big picture of each one so you can see how they work together and where to begin.
Financial Freedom Is About More Than a Bigger Paycheck
A higher income helps, but it does not automatically create financial freedom. More income without a plan can disappear just as quickly as less income.
That is why I built The Financially Free NP around five areas that support each other. Each one matters, and the order matters too.
The 5 Ps of Financial Freedom for Nurse Practitioners
1. Perspective
Before you change your finances, you have to understand the beliefs and behaviors driving them.
Perspective is an honest look at how you think about money, success, work, debt, and what you believe you are supposed to do with the income you earn. Sometimes the biggest financial shift starts before a single number changes.
That was true for me. Before any payment moved the needle, I stopped treating $224,000 like a life sentence and started treating it like a problem with a deadline.
2. Plan
This is where you get clear about what financial freedom actually looks like for you. Not someone on social media. Not another NP. You.
Once my mindset shifted, I needed real numbers. I set actual categories and an actual timeline, mapped out twenty-two months, and taped a tracker to my bathroom door so I could see it every day. The goal of a plan is to stop making random financial moves and start making decisions connected to a bigger destination.
3. Process
Knowing what you want is one thing. Building a repeatable way to get there is another.
Your process is what keeps financial progress going when life gets busy, like long clinic days and tired weeks. It turns good intentions into something you can follow without constantly starting over.
4. Profit
Psych NPs have valuable skills, education, and earning potential. Earning well and building wealth are not automatically the same thing.
Profit is about making the income you already earn work harder for you. It also means recognizing when additional income makes sense and when it simply adds more work to an already full schedule.
5. Position
Eventually, the goal is not to keep working harder. It is to put yourself in a financial position where you have choices.
Choices about how many days you work. Choices about the jobs you accept. Choices about whether you need overtime, another contract, or another side hustle.
That is what financial freedom means to me. It is a financial life where your money supports the life and career you actually want.
Why the Order of the 5 Ps Matters
Each P builds on the one before it. Perspective shows you what is really driving your money decisions. Plan gives those decisions a destination. Process keeps you moving. Profit makes your income work harder. Position gives you choices.
Many nurse practitioners jump straight to earning more, whether that means picking up shifts or starting a side hustle. Without the earlier steps, that often leads to working more and feeling no freer. Starting with Perspective and Plan gives everything after it something solid to stand on.
Where to Start This Week
You do not have to tackle all five at once. Here are three small steps that begin the work:
- Write down what you currently believe about money, debt, and what you should do with your income.
- Describe in a few sentences what financial freedom looks like for you, and pick a date to work toward.
- List every debt you have, with the balance and interest rate.
These steps are Perspective and Plan in action. They are simple, and they are the same place I started.
